St. Angela Hospital, Chandmari

Rev. Fr. Guidera S.J., the Parish Priest of Chakradharpur, Dist. Singhbhum, in consultation with the then Bishop Picachi S.J. of calcutta visited the Ursuline Sisters of Ranchi for education and health care of the local "HO" tribals.  The diocese of Jamshedpur handed over the Carmel School run by the Carmel sisters of Ernakulam to the Ursulines on May 20, 1970.

another property in the same area called Chandmari donated by Mr. and Mrs. Pintu to the Jesuits was also offered to the Ursulines for a Hospital and a Grihini School.  Misereor donated the Hospital, the Grihini School and the staff quarters.  Father Guidera S.J. was a great help to the Sisters in the establishment of the Carmel School at Chakradharpur and the Hospital cum Grihini School at Chandmari.

"The Saint Angela Hospital" "The Grihini School" and "The Staff Quarters" were blessed on June 13, 1973.  sister Alphonse Van den Broeck and Sister Elise Loncin have been administrators.  Dr. Muhmmed Ali joined the Hospital staff right from the very beginning and rendered service as long as the Sisters needed his assistance.  Though the Railway Hospital and other Nursing Homes are in the town, yet there are enough patients to be cared for.  Actually a dispensary in the beginning grew into a hospital with 36-40 beds.  Sisters have been rendering dedicated services to the mixed community of people belonging to different castes and creeds and those coming from far off villages.  People are also served in the Railway Hospital and other clinics in the town.  If needed the Sisters do attend sick calls in the villages.

Sister Mercy Joseph is the Health Co-ordinator of Jamshedpur Diocese working under Rev. Father C.R. Prabhu who has been the Director of Catholic charities (C.R.S.) at Jan Vikas Bharati, Patel Bagan, Sundar Nagar, Jamshedpur.  She conducts health programmes in the Diocese, West and East Singhbhum.

Sister Mercy is also a member of CRI unit, Calcutta.  She conducts Health Training Camps from time to time to train village Health workers.  On April 22-24, 2002, more than 80 women and men of Bihar, Paharia and Sabbar communities participated actively in a health training camp in Ramgarh, Chandil Block.  The primitive tribals took interest and learnt the mysteries of health.  There is a great awareness being built among the Primitive tribals in their efforts to join the main stream of the society.

Also in April a 10 day programme on "Dynamic Development" was conducted with the help of Caritas India.  The 41 participants represented the different dioceses of Bihar, Jharkhand, Utranchal and Uttar Pradesh.

This workshop was inaugurated by Fr. Gregory D'souza, the Assistant Director of Caritas, India and Fr. George Manarakam, representative of Rt. Reverend Bishop Felix Toppo S.J. of Jamshedpur.  The topics of discussions held were on social analysis, community building, types of leadership, poverty, development, vision, aims and objectives.
