Ursuline Convent Tongo

Opening of School

Lace School

Tongo was the third Ursuline Convent in Chota Nagpur.  Tongo being situated on a plateau, the air is very salubrious.  The Christians were numerous.  There were 10,000 of them in the surroundings.  Mother Anthony took charge of this new foundation on December 27, 1907 leaving Khunti in the hands of Mother Xaveria.

A colourful reception awaited the new Missionaries in Tongo.  On January 2, 1907, the 7 Sisters, 4 Ursulines and 3 Daughters of St. Anne made their solemn entry into their new mission post.  The following day they took charge of the Catechumenate.

Opening of School

On January 15, 1907, the School was opened.  It was an unparalleled success, 420 pupils were packed together in the rooms, which had just been built and had not even had the time to dry.  Mother Anthony was radiant with joy.  But alas!  this joy was short lived.  That same evening the Exodus started!   The children made use of every avenue of escape.  They fled through doors and windows, any opening they could find to go back to the sweet freedom of the jungle.

Two weeks later there were 40 left.  Sisters were badly upset and Mother Anthony had to think deeply as to what should be done.  A man was sent to all the mission stations with a message instructing the Priests not to send them back to school and warned the 40 faithful ones to behave well, and they complied with her request so much so that, a short time later, when Mother Anthony went to visit Khunti Convent, all 40 of them ran after the 'DOLI' right up to Khunti and returned to Tongo only when Mother Anthony herself went back.  It had not taken a month to conquer the hearts of these little ones.  Later on, the others were called back in small groups.  By the end of March, the school had 250 pupils on the roll.  All proved to be obedient little girls.  In 1932, a middle school was started by the Ursulines at Tongo.

Lace School

In 1917 a Lace-workroom was opened in Tongo to help the women whose husbands had gone to Europe during the war.
