Ursuline Convent Rengarih
Burning with zeal and being restless for the Kingdom of
God. Mother Anthony left Tongo in the first week of January 1909, to
found Rengarih Convent with 2 Belgian Sisters. After 3 miles of
journey from Tongo, their stretcher broke down and they started walking,
only to be exhausted after a few hours. The night was spent in a dak
bungalow. In the morning, the people of that area helped them out by
giving them a sort of cart and the 3 Sisters were carried in turns.
By 4.00 P.M., they were in Rengarih. Rev. Father Cardon was simply
dumb-founded on seeing the Sisters, as they were most unexpected and
nothing was ready for them. But the joy of the Sisters for having
reached Rengarih was so great that they did not mind in the least that
nothing was ready for them.
Building of
Convent and the Storm
Three weeks later, to their great joy, one room of the
future Convent was ready to be used and also the kitchen. They
praised God for this blessing. Great was their joy when the Convent
and the Children's dormitory were also ready. But to their dismay,
soon after the work was completed in the dormitory, the beams came
crashing down, but the faith of the great pioneer was such that she just
repeated the words uttered by Mother Renelde, Superior when in Tildonk the
brick work of the Church had come down, "You are just, Lord, all your
judgements are just." The very next morning, the Sisters at
breakfast heard a cracking sound and saw pieces falling from the
ceiling. Father Stoffels, seeing the danger said, "All the
beams had to be taken down and replaced by stronger ones."
Prudence is the Mother of safety. The heart had begun and the
Sisters had only an iron sheet heated by the Indian sun above their heads.
The last penny for the building was over, but Father would
give wood from their jungle and the Sisters would rely on Divine
Providence for the rest. A few weeks later, everything was repaired
without any debt. Classes were help under a tree till the building
was finished towards the end of the year. Meals were in the open air
too. They slept in a kind of shed in ruins. Everything was
taken patiently by the students in the stride.
In 1911, the monsoon started as usual with gentle and
refreshing rains. Two days later, there was a flood in the river
close by and the water rose 15 feet high.
On June 9, 1911, a wild hurricane started at 6.00 P.M.,
accompanied by thunder elaps and flashes of lightning lasting till 8.00
P.M. The roof of the Convent was blown away like a piece of
cloth. The rice godown, the laundry, all remained bare. Many
things were spoiled. The wind took the roofs to a neighbouring
field, 15 meters far.
