Ursuline Convent Noatoli
Noatoli, situated about half way between Khunti and Rengarih, was by
now a very flourishing centre of Christianity. There were 4 priests
at this centre in 1925. They visited the surrounding villages
inhabited by Mundas, Oraons and Kharias. The Sisters of St. Anne
were already doing very good apostolic work there. But as Msgr.
wanted by all means the Ursulines, to be there, Mother Anthony appointed
Mother Xaveria who had been in Khunti for 21 years, in charge of this big
and difficult job. Sister Bertha Van Loo, also from Khunti was her
companion. They left Khunti on March 6, 1925. The car in which they
were travelling got submerged in the river Karo and they had tremendous
trouble to proceed. After more adventures in the water, ultimately,
they reached Noatoli in the afternoon.
Starting with Bethlehem
They were received most warmly by the parish priest. The Sisters'
bungalow was an old mud hut, reminding them of Bethlehem. It had one
door and 3 rooms. To Sister Bertha's amusement, she discovered that
the place used as kitchen could just contain the fireplace and herself,
nothing more!
Fortunately, Mother Xaveria, a good architect, could enlarge the
kitchen by having a wall broken down and making the place spacious!
Now Sister Bertha could cook without knocking her arms against the walls!!
Building of the Convent
The Sisters had to see to the building of a School and Convent without
an architect or supervisor. They had to supervise all the work of
the building, from cutting and sawing of wood from distant jungles, baking
of bricks and tiles, to the final stage of the building.
Mother Celine, Mother Louise and Mother Valerie joined the
community. The first hut was occupied by Mother Superior and Mother
Bertha which was called "The Convent". A second hut was
got ready for the 3 of them. Somehow a catechumenate had been
started in December with 150 young girls for marriage. Noatoli
seemed a Mission full of promise for the future. But even without a
building classes started on February 1, 1926 with 180 pupils of whom 140
were boarders.
Blessing and laying of the
first stone
On the 1st Friday of August, the ceremony of the Blessing and Laying of
the first stone of the Convent was held. Great indeed was the
rejoicing of the people who gathered for the occasion including
catechists, workers, children and others.
By December, a tiny Chapel was ready and on 20th Holy Mass was
celebrated there. Instead of candles, lanterns were used on the
altar. In 1932, a Middle school started at Noatoli.
