Rev. Mother Augustine accompanied Mother Godelieve Van Achter, Mother Majella Lauwers and Mother Leontina Tigga to begin an Ursuline Community at Lohardaga.

Opening of Hospital

April 20, 1967 was a red letter day.  The Ursuline Sisters opened their very first new Hospital in Lohardaga.  His Grace Rev. Pius Kerketta S.J., Archbishop of Ranchi, blessed this new hospital entitled "Saint Ursula Hospital."  Among the well wishers and friends present were Fr. Delporte S.J., Fr. Backaert S.J., Fr. Van Winckel S.J., Fr. Francis Ivern S.J., and Mother Clara, Provincial of the Ursuline Sisters.  This hospital is a kind gift of the German people through Misereor - the German Bishops' Campaign Against Hunger and Disease.

Saint Ursula Hospital staffed by a Sister Doctor, Sister Nurses and lay Nurses with an auxiliary Nursing School is a great boon to the poor people who clock there for treatment.  The sick and the weary find St. Ursula Hospital a haven of rest and relaxation surrounded by pretty flowers and green shrubbery.

Montessori School

On May 5, 1967 the Montessori was opened at Lohardaga by Mr. Joosten, Director of Indian Montessori Training Courses.  He cordially thanked all present and expressed his satisfaction and joy to see in Lohardaga a "House for the Children."

Sisters' Residence

The property on either side of the Bero Road was for sale.  Formerly the plot of land with the bungalow belonged to Mr. Kelly and on the other side was a depot for tea pickers of Assam.  The bungallow later became the Sisters' residence.  The family of Fr. Lebas, generously donated a small Church, Priests' bungalow and the School for boys in the T.T.C. compound.  The Parish was shifted to Kaimo Patratoli.

Building of School

Sometime later, Sister Aloysia Kujur, Sister Paul Xalxo and Sister Sushila Kispotta joined the community.  On December 24, 1961, Sisters shifted from their old residence in the Parish to the small bungalow of Mr. Kelly, their Convent Home dedicated to the Little Flower.  The Primary School was inspected and recognized and the School opened on January 3, 1962.  The new School building was erected for the Middle School and in 1971, the High School started.  Sister Noella Bara was the first Headmistress.

With the help of Caritas India, Swiss Lenten Campaign and Misereor, the School building got extended, then the hall, the Convent building, and the dining hall were also constructed.  At present all the three sections - High School, Middle School and Montessori School are rendering great service to the people in Lohardaga.

Senior Teachers' Training School

In 1962 the Senior Teachers'Training School was shifted from Ranchi to Lohardaga.  Sister Alice De Bruyn, the Principal along with Sister Catherine Tirkey, Sister Beatrix Toppo, Sister Adele Topno and 23 trainees were lodged temporarily in the new School building.  The Senior Teachers' Training now known as Primary Teachers' Training College, started functioning.  Misereor donated the Primary Teachers' Training College building.  This College caters a 2 year Training programme.  Students belonging to different backgrounds are receiving an excellent training; a hundred of them pass out every year.  Unfortunately the exams are very irregular.  Hence their future is at stake.  Sometimes batches after batches of students wait for the exams for several years at a stretch as it happened from the year 1995-2003.  Eight years of anxious waiting for the exam!!  This is a rare occurrence which all hope will not be repeated again.

Women's Teachers Training College

Ursuline Women's Teacher Training College was started on September 1, 1971 on the advice of Vice Chancellor Dr. Jacob and the delegation who inspected the institution deputed by the university.  It is a residential College.  The inauguration of the College took place on the same day by His Grace, Rt. Rev. Late Pius Kerketta S.J.  Some Lecturers of the Government Teachers' Training College, Ranchi and the Dean of the Faculty of Education graced the occasion.  The local leaders and prominent people were present at the inauguration.  The board with the name of the College on it was unveiled by His Grace and Sister Georgine Joseph, the first Principal of the College gave a welcome speech.  A short reception was given by the students in the hall.

The next Principal, Sister Agnes Lugun was in office for 17 years followed by the present Principal Sister Lina John.  Both of them worked hard to get the College affiliated.  Finally on October 3, 1997 the College was granted affiliation.

Several Ursuline Sisters have had the privilege of being on the College Staff.  Lay professors are part timers and students from all over the country receive a fine training here.  It is a one year training programme meant mostly for tribal students.  Every year 100 trainees complete the course obtaining excellent results.  The College has been furnished with computers and equipped with a very good library.

Physical Education College

In 1962 already, Sister Alice De Bruya had fixed up a well furnished gymnasium in view of establishing a Physical Education College because physical Education is one of the curricular subjects of the College.

This Institution was established on July 12, 1989, to train women for Physical fitness who after the completion of the Training are employed as P.T. Teachers in the Schools.  Two types of courses are offered for the students:

1)  C.P.Ed. (Certificate in Physical Education)
2)  D.P.Ed. (Diploma in Physical Education)

This College is recognized by the Bihar Government on June 16, 1995 only for 6 sessions.  Sister Irene Ekka, the Principal, has not left any stone unturned to obtain Government recognition for the College.  This is the only Catholic Training Institution in the state of Jharkhand.  The results of the first 3 sessions prior to the recognition were very good.  But the students of the following groups haven't had their exams yet.  But the staff and students do not give up hope.

These 3 Training Institutions are privately managed without subsidy and scholarships.  The majority of the trainees are tribals.  The Trained Teachers from these institutions are in great demand.  Together with the Principals, the members of the staff give their very best to form women leaders.  Both the Founders, Saint Angela Merici and Rev. John Lambertz have stressed on giving formation to women leaders who in their turn will be forming other leaders for the building up of a better world.  These young women are actively engaged in their curricular and co-curricular activities both in class rooms and on the field.  Catechetics, Bible study, Conferences on women's issues, social works are part of their programmes.  Punctuality, discipline, seriousness, dedication, hard labour with morning and evening prayers contribute towards their individual cum communitarian growth.  A very good Christian atmosphere is maintained throughout.
