Chandrapura: One of the happiest events of 2007 namely that on 2nd July the Eastern Regional Committee of NCTE (National Council for Teacher Education) has granted unconditional recognition to our Ursuline Primary Teachers’ Education College at Chandrapura. October 2, 2007 became a Red-Letter Day in the history of the Ursulines in India. On this day the Inauguration of Ursuline Primary Teachers’ Education College took place. Rt. Rev. Julius Marandi D.D., Bishop of Dumka inaugurated the Training Institution and facilitated the Principal, Staff and the students.

It is to be noted that Ursuline Primary Teachers’ Education College, Chandrapura has a long history that goes back to 1980 when the then Bishop of Dumka, His Eminence, Telesphore Cardinal P. Toppo D.D. had a vision of quality education of the youth, by establishing a Training College in the Diocese where the teachers of 80 village schools founded all over the diocese could be trained and who would help to raise the standard of education in these schools.

At his earnest request to the Ursulines, Sr. Lutgardis Barla came to Dumka as Coordinator of Education in the diocese. After the transfer of His Eminence to Ranchi Archdiocese, Bishop Stephen Tiru too encouraged this project, and the present site of Chandrapura was accepted in 1990 to establish the college by the then Provincial Sr. Marina Ekka and her Council. Sr. Lutgardis applied to Misereor, Germany and received the required financial assistance from the Organization in 1993. The foundation of the College building was laid on 19th March 1993, but due to many kinds of difficulties on the way, the construction work took years to be completed. In 1996, Sr. Vincentia Ekka with Sr. Wineeta Bilung began to stay there permanently for the supervision of the building. After one year, Sr. John Mary Ekka joined the community. A Primary School was also opened for the children in the area.

As the work progressed, Sr. Pushpica Tigga was appointed in May 2002 to further the work of getting future Training College recognized by the Jharkhand Government, and affiliated by NCTE (National Council of Teacher Education). She lost no time in gathering all the documents required and submitted them to get NOC (Non Objection Certificate) from Jharkhand Government on October 2, 2002. There were two on-the-spot inspections of the College in 2003 and 2004.

His Lordship Bishop Julius Marndi gave further impetus to the work of affiliation by giving the required land for the college on lease in May 2005. On July 2, 2007, the NCTE gave temporary affiliation, and on 9th August 2007, the College received permanent affiliation without any condition.

The application forms were distributed selection tests done, admission was taken for the first batch of Trainees on 22nd September 2007, and the Training College began its academic session on 24th September 2007.

The first batch of Ursuline Primary Teacher Training Education College, Chandrapura with an intake of 50 students (30 girls and 20 boys) is already running full swing now as a residential training College.

Education through Language cum Computer Lab.:

The advanced technology has much to do with all round development of youth today. We are glad to announce this good news that on 23rd May 2008 Sr. Roshni Baxla, Provincial and Honorable guest Miss Vandana Dadel, Welfare Officer, Jharkhand inaugurated the two important laboratories for Language and Computer at Ursuline Convent, Girls’ High School, Khunti. First time in the history of Indian Province the newly installed lab has opened the horizon of computer and language studies to more than 1000 Ursuline students at Khunti every year. The modern fully equipped lab will provide skill and quality education in computer. There will be access to Internet, which will enhance better communication with the world news and views. This will prepare them

for higher studies, greater job opportunity and future leadership. We are very grateful to Irish Embassy for their generous contribution to help us furnish two classrooms with 20 computers and 70 audio sets. Thanks to Sr. Julia George, Sr. Anice George the headmistress and Sisters of Khunti Community for their cooperation.
